AVANZI, NICCOLO or DAVANZO (Ital.), a distinguished Stone and Crystal-cutter and Engraver of Verona, who lived in the second half of the sixteenth century. He also worked for some time at Rome. To him we owe a celebrated lapis-lazuli representing the Nativity of our Lord, which it is said, Isabella of Gonzaga, Duchess of Urbino, acquired after great trouble. Avanzi's pupil was Matteo del Nassaro, the famous engraver at the court of Francis I. of France. Bibliography. — Babelon, Camées antiques et modernes, Paris, 1897.
