BECK, JEAN HENRI (French). Gem-engraver of the first half of the nineteenth century. He was the adopted son and pupil of Mayer Simon, who at his death left him his business. For some time he cut precious stones, then turned his attention to the manufacture of bronzes. In 1845, he bequeathed to the Cabinet des Médailles his collection of gems, comprizing antique and modern camei, intagli, and a jewel of the Renaissance period. The most valuable of these is perhaps a celebrated sardonyx, The Judgment of Paris, which M. Babelon considers antique and for which Beck had paid the sum of 16000 frs. Bibliography. — Babelon, Camées antiques et modernes de la Bibliothéque Nationale, CIX, 1897.
