BARIER, FRANCOIS JULES (French). Born at Laval, 1680. Gemengraver, whose most admired portraits are those of the Marquis Rangoni and of Fontenelle. He executed also very beautiful and minute figures on cornelian and agate vases, and most worthy of admiration is a vase decoration representing Venus and Cupid. He was the ordinary court-engraver of Louis XV., and died at Paris in 1746. Voltaire names him in the following lines which he sent to a lady with a ring bearing his portrait engraved by Bar...
