BORREL, VALENTIN MAURICE (French). Born, 24. July 1804, died 29. March 1882. At the age of twelve, he was apprenticed to the medallist J. J. Barre, who was then Engraver-general at the French Mint. He was 24 years old when he engraved his first portrait, that of the actor Picard ; this was followed by others of Andrieux, Alexandre Duval, Yon Barré, Népomucéne Lemercier, and Mme Duval. BORRIEN AND MAGENS (Brit.). " In the year 1798, in consequence of the extreme scarcity of silver money, Messrs. Dorrien and Magens sent a quantity of bullion to the Mint to be coined according to the law, which had never been repealed, by which it was enacted that any one sending bullion to the Mint might have it coined into money, upon the payment of certain dues. He worked for William III. until 1703, when he went to Berlin, but returned to Amsterdam in 1706, where we still find him in 1708.
