CHAVANNE, JEAN MARIE (French). Medallist of the end of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth century, born at Lyons in 1766. He produced a number of interesting medals, relating to events of the Consulate and the Empire, as well as a series of jetons, some of the best known being that of the Medical Society of Lyons, with head of Hippocrates on obv. and the signature CHAVANNE F., and others of the Lyonnese Society of Friends of Commerce and Arts, and of the Pharmaceutical Society of the same city. His son Jean- Marie, painter and architect, a pupil of the medallist Galle, is mentioned as having also cut medal-dies, and exhibited some works at the Salons. In 1848, he engraved a medal to commemorate the first result of the universal vote in the Department of the Rhône. His signature appears also on a Portrait-medal of Abbé Dr Jean Francois Rozier, of Lyons; — Medical Society of Lyons, 1789 ; — Pharmaceutical Society of Lyons, 1806.
