He was a pupil of David d'Angers and entered the Ecole des Beaux- Arts on the 5th of October 1829. In 1835 he obtained the Prix de Rome for medal-engraving; subject: Romulus carrying warspoils; and in 1863 he was elected Professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts.
