CHAPAT, LOUIS (French). Gem-engraver and Writer, born at Orange towards the end of the seventeenth century, resided at Geneva and then at Berlin. The Geneva Library possesses two works by this artist : Portraits of Calvin and Theodore Beza, on silex; — Portrait of Calvin, on a serpentine, 1771. He was born at Mortagne (Orne), on the 12th of July, 1839, studied under the sculptor Jouffroy, and the medal-engraver Oudiné, and entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1857.
