JAMNITZER, WENZEL (Germ.). Goldsmith, Line-engraver and Medallist, born at Vienna in 1508; died at Nuremberg on the 15th of December, 1585. Nagler calls him " der grösste deutsche Goldschmied ", and adds : " Er brach vollständig mit der Gothik und schloss sich der italienischen Renaissance an, innerhalb welcher er, unter allen seinen Kunstgenossen, am originellsten und anmuthigsten sich zu bewegen weiss.
