He was a Line-engraver, and worked in turn at Cologne, Bonn and Ehrenbreitstein, 1727-1764. The coins he engraved for the Bishop of Würzburg, Adam Frederick, Count Seinsheim, are signed L, or V. LON. He was one of the originators of the National Portrait Gallery of distinguished Americans, the first volume of which appeared in 1834.
