PATTERSON, ROBERT MASKELL (Amer.). Sixth Director of the United States Mint at Philadelphia, appointed May 26, 1835, by President Andrew Jackson. "His term of office", says Evans, "was marked by an entire revolution in the coinage, and the ready acceptance of those improvements which followed so rapidly upon the introduction of steam ".
