PEREIRA, LUIZ GONZAGA (Port.). Mint-engraver's assistant at Lisbon in 1826; appointed third Engraver on 21. August 1833 ; second Engraver, 24. December 1853; and Chief-engraver on 7. December 1864. He was born in 1796, and died on 8. September 1868. Pupil of Sim?o Francisco dos Santos. In conjunction with Caetano Alberto, he was commissioned in 1822 to prepare models for a new " Moeda constitucional ". By him are also Patterns for a Decimal coinage. PERGAMOS (Greek). Gem-engraver of ancient times. The inscription, ?EP?AMOY (not very clear) occurs on a paste, red and transparent, in the Florence Museum ; subject, Dancing Faun with thyrsus. Furtwängler admits the style of the gem to be antique, but otherwise condemns the piece as modern. Reinach does not agree with this opinion. Babelon thinks the paste is a copy of a gem now lost. PERGER, BERNHARD (Germ.). Medallist, and Mint-engraver at Naples, from circ. 1769 to 1798. The engraver, Antonio de Gennaro, was his predecessor at the Mint. His initials B.
