BAUER, HANS (Germ.). Goldsmith, and Mint-master, at Brunswick, previous to the 1st of May 1572, when he entered the joint services of Landgrave William IV. of Cassel, Lewis III. of Marburg, and George I. of Darmstadt. His signature was HB in monogram, sometimes accompanied by a trefoil. He seems to have been in the Hessian service until 1610. His predecessor was Hans Perndorffer, 1564-1575. Bibliography. — P. In medieval and early modern Germany, the Münzmeister ("mint master", the Latin term is monetarius) was the director or administrator of a mint, a moneyer with responsibility for the minting of coins, or specie. His duties were defined differently at different locations and ages.
