MARENDE, JEAN (French). Goldsmith of Bourg-en-Bresse, who in 1502 executed the large medal cast in gold (weighing 490 grammes) with portraits of Philibert the Fair and Margaret of Austria (obv. illustrated) which was presented to these Princes by the town of Bourg on their visit there. " A lead proof of Marende's first design of this medal is still in existence. Specimens in bronze now and then turn up at auction sales ; the one reproduced above was formerly in the collection of Dr Belli of Frankfort-on-Main, sold in 1905, and now in the possession of M. Gallet, of La Chaux-de-Fonds.
