DIE POLISHING
Mirror finish is obtained by manual polishing.
The actual process of manual die polishing is very lengthy. As well as engravers, also staff doing polishing works for hours using microscope.
By using special tools, wooden sticks and leather, a special polishing paste containing diamonds of various coarseness is applied to a steel die. It is spread by careful movements. The whole coin surface after polishing must be cleaned with the same care from the remain polish. After that, they repeat the whole process again with polish containing diamonds of lower coarseness. And then again and again.
Polishing requires focused work with microscope.
In the last stage, the polishing is done with diamonds having a diameter of one micron. Any mistake during polishing is immediately visible, and it means to start the whole process again. A polisher, who makes a mistake, has usually only one chance for correction. The height of a polished coin surface is dangerously close to the relief and there is a danger of destruction of the entire die.
